History and Nature in One Spot

When the great teacher of Balinese Hindu Dhang Hyang Nirartha was heading to Uluwatu, he arrived at a location at the southwestern coast of Bali Island. The area is without a temple like the other area in the island. As such, it is fearful. Before continuing his journey to Uluwatu, the great teacher chatted with a god named Batara Masceti. During their conversation, the teacher saw flashes of black shadow that hid among the bushes. The teacher called it. It turns out that the shadow is a giant named Bhuta Ijo. The teacher gave Bhuto Ijo an order and a skill to keep a sacred relic.

Bhuto Ijo was a faithful giant. He guarded the relic with great care. The relic was a small box for saving betel wine. As he was very faithful, Bhuto Ijo punished every person who came to the area to looking for woods. In order to prevent the giant from disturbing the people, the community agreed to build a temple for the area. So they built a sacred temple for the giant and they called it Pura Petitenget or Petitenget Temple. That is the origin of one of the most sacred temples in the Island of the Gods.
